The Museum of Bristol

Bristol's Industrial Museum closed on 29 October 2006 and work has started on transforming it into the new new Museum of Bristol. The design will retain many of the existing features seen on the current building. Right in the heart of the city's historic harbour, the Museum of Bristol will tell the unique story of the city, its people and its place in the world.

Boats, trains and cranes

During the Museum of Bristol construction phase, we hope to continue to operate the Museum's popular working exhibits - Bristol Harbour Railway with its locally-built steam engines, the world's oldest steam tug Mayflower, Bristol Harbour's former fire boat Pyronaut and the historic tug John King - for trips on some weekends.

The amazing Fairbairn steam crane will be opened and operated now and then, and restoration work will continue on the four electric cranes on Princes Wharf, with occasional opportunities for visits to the control cabs.

Industrial and Maritime History items

The closure of the Industrial Museum doesn't mean that the Museum Service no longer wants items relating to Bristol's industrial and maritime past and present - far from it. School visits

The Museum Learning Department hopes to continue delivering workshop sessions for schools on the themes of the slave trade, Bristol as a port and Bristol during World War II previously provided at the Industrial Museum. See the Learning Department pages for up to date information.

By bus: Service numbers 1, 8, 9, 41, 43, 54, 55 & 99, from the city centre and Temple Meads train station.

By car: 2 miles from the M32. Public car parks nearby.
