Energy awareness - Display campaign
- The Display Campaign is aimed at encouraging local authorities across Europe to display the energy consumption, CO2 emissions and water use of their buildings to staff and members of the public alike.
- The campaign is the first in Europe and is co-ordinated by Energie-Cités.
- Any European municipality may participate in the Display campaign, regardless of its size, the extent of its building stock or its level of knowledge regarding its buildings' consumption of resources.
- The campaign is primarily a vehicle for promoting sustainable energy use in buildings. Its aims are to stimulate implementation of European Directive 2002/91/EC on the Energy Performance of Buildings, which must be transposed by Member States by January 2006.
- This Directive indicates that Member States must take measures to display the energy performance of public buildings. Display gives volunteer municipalities the opportunity to plan for this.
Municipalities taking part in the Display campaign must use an online tool that enables them to:
- calculate a building's energy, water and CO2 consumption;
- classify buildings, from A to G, according to a similar scale for energy efficiency in household electrical appliances;
- display results using the Display label in poster format.
The tool also enables them to:
- assess the performance of each building, which may lead to implementing a municipal improvement plan;
- compare, year on year, the performances of a building in terms of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and water consumption and to measure progress;
- compare performances of their buildings with other European municipalities.
Bristol City Council is one of 36 councils in the UK to participate in the scheme along with others, such as Birmingham, City of York, Coventry, Derby, Kingston-upon-Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Nottingham, North Yorkshire, Sheffield and Walsall.
Our use of Display posters is part of our continuing programme of energy awareness, which enables staff and members of the public alike to make informed decisions about their actions at work and at home to make best use of energy and reduce their impact on the environment.
